This paper examines the paintings in the Codex looking for evidence of artistic identity. The earlier idea of a European artist is rejected, but the probable European source of the compositional format in types is identified. The various styles of Indian painting current at the time of the Codex’s creation are discussed and resemblances between these styles and that of the Codex painter identified. Evidence of his Indian origin is found in the artist’s handling of spatial relationships, of architectural features and of the human figure. It is concluded that the painter of the Codex was a Sultanate artist trained in Gujarat or Mandu who was subsequently based in Goa.
