The Anglo-Portuguese opposition that arose in Bombay since 1665 reached a new dimension with the 1716 and 1722 clashes. These disputes resulted from disagreements about navigation control and custom rights on the Mahim river. Further territorial and bordering conflicts make this conjuncture particularly interesting to understand the interaction between Portuguese and Englishmen in that part of the Indian subcontinent.
