This paper aims to discuss some aspects of the major prophetic ideas of Antônio Vieira, trying to explain their changes in relation to the difficulties that the Jesuit faced throughout his life. The main goal is to present some issues connected, firstly, to the relationship established by the Jesuit between the hope of a hidden king and the verses written by the cobbler Gonçalo Annes Bandarra, the so-called prophet of sebastianism; and, secondly, to the reasons why Vieira kept away from these initial references, without denying the value of the prophecy to predict the future.
