In the second half of 17th century, a separatist movement shook the foundations of the Portuguese Benedictine Congregation. Those who were involved demanded the right to choose abbots and others ecclesiastical positions. This article aims to show the social status of the main characters in this plot and the strategies they used to reach their aims. Focus is laid on the monks’ sociability and their institutional linkages.
