De Soldado Português a Marechal do Exército Brasileiro: Raimundo José da Cunha Mattos (1776-1839)

The field marshall Raimundo José da Cunha Mattos, born in Algarve em 1776 e deceased in Rio de Janeiro in 1839 was part of a generation of Royal servants which were influenced by Pombal’s reforms and D. Rodrigo de Souza Coutinho’s proposals. In face of revolutionary events following the French Revolution they had to adjust their loyalties. Cunha Mattos, a unionist ended being a great contributor to the brazilian empire consolidation while there was a dispute among various sovereignity projects to the brazilian empire.
