This work aims to fulfill a three-point and complementary objective: a) to explain the political programme of Manuel Joaquín Álvarez de Toledo y Portugal (1644-1707), Count of Oropesa; b) to resolve the secession of Portugal and the Spanish succession in keeping with the interests of the powerful noble houses of Portugal and Spain; and c) to propose an international - Iberism - outlook to moderate between the continental hegemony of France (Frenchism) and of Austria (austracismo) and the maritime hegemony of England and Holland. From a methodological stance, the inextricable interrelations between the biographies of outstanding historical figures and these complex processes have been taken into account. And to achieve the results, it has been necessary to recover the histo-riographic memory regarding the international importance of Iberism at the end of the 17th century.
