This article aims to discuss inflexions on the decision making process and political issues in Portugal and Brazil during the first decades of D. John V's reign. Reconsidering recent studies on the subject both in Portugal and Brazil, it analyses a collection of the Overseas Office papers in which the governor's performances, the administrative and bureaucratic procedures, the political and decision making channels, and the practice of "bom governo" take an important place.
