Between 1597 and 1625, the small Saint Helena Island, on the South Atlantic, witnessed five combats between Portuguese ships from the «Carreira da Índia» and Dutch ships on their way from Asia to Europe. This article describes this series of combats in detail, particularly the capture of the galleon Santiago, which was for the Portuguese the most serious incident of all, after which the «Carreira da Índia» ships stopped calling at the island with regularity.
