Considering the relevance obtained by the production and the circulation of writings either in print or by hand in the Western world from the 16th century on, this paper aims at indicating a few elements of the relations established between the Crown of Portugal and the houses of publishers, typographers and booksellers, in the attempt to identify the moments and the mechanisms by which their activity was acknowledged, fostered and attracted to the realm of the royal power in the period from 1500 to 1640. The identification of different policies in the reigns from D. Manuel I to Filipe IV of Spain, as for the concession of privileges to authors, publishing houses and booksellers, as well as the consolidation of royal and inquisitorial censorship, ascribe new meanings to the printed text in the cultural dynamics of the period.
