This paper analyses the portrait albums made by the Abbot Diogo Barbosa Machado. His book was endowed to the Real Biblioteca, and reached Brazil after the Portuguese court’s arrival, therefore integrating the Biblioteca Nacional holdings in Rio de Janeiro. The selection of the pictures, the thematic order and the scraps arrangement (indeed it is a collection of scrap books) make clear the criterion used by the bibliophile as an Academia Real de História member, as well as shows the Portuguese Ancien Régime values. The set also discloses the social ascent expectations literary men had, their zeal for building collections and an ever increasing memory’s concern with has been renewed between Portugal and Brazil up to this time.
