In the Portuguese Empire, the naturalists participated in a state project of surveying the three kingdom of nature, the people and the geography. Dedicated to the king, these services were an important element in the patronage relationship. While making swift social mobility possible for some, patronage could also cause enourmous frustation among individuals who did not know how to play the patronage game.
