The article explores the attitude of the Portuguese-American academic elites with regard to the reforms carried out by the Marquis of Pombal which improved the legal position of the native indigenous populations in the context of the implementation of the Portuguese- Spanish territorial treaties (1750-1777). It also deals with the significance of the indianista crioulo argument created by the scholars of the Academia Brasílica dos Renascidos
