Indian shipyards were developed to respond to the challenges of the empire’s expansion. Gradually, these spaces took on two dimensions: their activity was intended to satisfy the needs of the Cape route, and to support another commercial circuit, the intra-Asian. To guarantee the functionality of this entire system, there was a professional group in each riverside responsible for the tasks of shipbuilding and ship repair, which are so necessary for the transactions carried out. It is our purpose to understand who these individuals were and how they were organized, to understand if this structure influenced/conditioned the dynamics of Asian shipyards.
