Abstract

This article deals with gold and thin coinage in the main Malay sultanates of northern Sumatra between the 14th and 16th centuries, namely Pidie, Samudera Pasai and Aceh. Three main topics are considered.
1. The gold sources for coinage purposes in these three Malay sultanates
2. The monetary systems
3. The collection and the meaning of gold and gold coins to those Malay sultans.
