The Empresa Nacional de Navegação, established in 1881, was the first consistent and lasting Portuguese steamship company to the African colonies. Its foundation put an end to a long period of projects, incentives, initiatives and setbacks during which the steam navigation to Portuguese Africa was basically an affair of foreign companies. The aim of this paper is, precisely, those first decades of deepsea steam navigation in Portugal and, thereby, the evaluation of the interest and commitment of Portuguese bourgeoisies in African undertakings.
