The relation just published belongs to a vast collection of documents written by the Spanish Dominicans, intended to publicize throughout Europe their missionary activities in China. This document describes the violence and humiliations inflicted by the Macao authorities to a group of five (six until April of 1708) Spanish Dominicans, who remained in Macao from July 1707 to January 1710. The account seems coherent, but a critical analysis leads us to conclude that these missionaries did not remain in Macao by portuguese imposition and that the violence inflicted does not justify the status of persecuted victims ascribed by these religious men to themselves.
