Carotid surgery cause profound changes on the brain blood flow, during and after surgery.
Cerebral perfusion may be evaluated by several methods: clinical signals in the awake patient; electroencephalogram; somatosensory evoked potencial; transcranial Doppler ultrasonography; xenon blood flow; stump pressure; cerebral oximetry. A revision is made of the available methods of cerebral monitoring with their advantages and limits.
