Anaesthesiology, as a medical specialty, was introduced in Lisbon Public Hospitals in the decades of 50/60 of the past century. The Lisbon Public Hospitals were officially created in 1913 as a group of hospitals scattered around Lisbon. This group soon developed an internal medical career, with degrees and examinations, much before the national medical career was created in the late 60’s. Anaesthesiology was integrated in the internal medical career in 1953 and Anaesthesiology Services were created in 1969. The political evolution and the hospital geographic distribution raised some difficulties to the Lisbon Public Hospitals Anaesthesiologists, faced with difficulties, namely concerning medical education.
