Migration, food and Christmas rites
notes on the importance of «hallaca» for Venezuelans
Abstract
«Hallaca» occupies a central symbolic position in the Christmas dinner in Venezuela, so that an equivalence between it and the Christmas dish par excellence in Brazil, the turkey, could be suggested. However, both dishes do not have the same degree of symbolic and cultural importance in the contexts in which they are inserted. Although Venezuelans who migrated to Brazil assimilate local traditions, including culinary ones, they should not be expected to give up non-negotiable rites and adopt turkey for Christmas dinner.
