In memoriam, Franz-Wilhelm HeimerAbstract
Franz-Wilhelm Heimer (April 12, 1930 – February 14, 2026) played a central role in the establishment and consolidation of what he himself termed “Modern African Studies,” a term used in his essay “Estudos Africanos em Portugal. Balanço das dinâmicas actuais” (Cadernos de Estudos Africanos, no. 1, 2001). His academic and institutional career is closely intertwined with the development of this academic field in Portugal, and the evolution of African Studies in the country can be understood through his intellectual journey.
