Special Thematic Dossier Human Rights under Pressure: Global Challenges and Local Tensions

The Revista Jurídica Portucalense announces the opening of submissions for its Special Thematic Dossier “Human Rights under Pressure: Global Challenges and Local Tensions”, devoted to a critical and interdisciplinary exploration of the contemporary transformations affecting the protection of human dignity in law and governance.

This special issue seeks to gather high-level academic contributions that examine how modern legal systems respond to the complex interplay between universal human rights principles and the local realities of inequality, migration, technological disruption, and environmental degradation.

Contributions are particularly welcome that:

  • analyse new forms of citizenship and democratic participation, including digital rights, media pluralism, and algorithmic governance;

  • address equality, diversity, and minority protection — gender, disability, and migration — as essential dimensions of justice and inclusion;

  • explore the interconnections between human rights and sustainable development, environmental justice, and the right to a healthy environment;

  • examine governance, public policy, and accountability in implementing human rights at global, regional, and local levels;

  • discuss the role of international and European institutions in upholding human dignity amid conflict, populism, and democratic regression;

  • reflect on the legal and ethical challenges posed by artificial intelligence, data control, and digital vulnerability to human rights universality.

Human rights are understood here as a foundational axis of contemporary legality, bridging freedom, equality, and sustainability as complementary dimensions of legitimacy, solidarity, and global justice.

Manuscripts may be submitted in English, Portuguese, Spanish, or French, in accordance with the editorial guidelines available on the journal’s official website.
All submissions will be subject to double-blind peer review.
