Revista Jurídica Portucalense (Human Rights under Pressure: Global Challenges and Local Tensions)
Vol. 2 No. 39 (2026)The Special Thematic Dossier Human Rights under Pressure: Global Challenges and Local Tensions brings together a set of contributions that examine how contemporary legal systems respond to situations of crisis, structural vulnerability, and profound technological and social transformation.
Rather than approaching human rights from a single doctrinal perspective, this dossier adopts a problem-oriented and cross-cutting view, focusing on concrete areas where the protection of human dignity is placed under particular strain. The published articles address, among other issues, restrictions of rights and freedoms in emergency contexts, structural and collective forms of litigation, civil liability and accountability for serious wrongdoing, the impact of artificial intelligence on labour and disability, the need for effective human oversight in clinical and technological decision-making, and the reconfiguration of labour law in times of sectoral and economic crisis.
Taken together, these contributions illustrate how global standards of human rights protection are tested and reshaped by local legal, institutional, and social realities, and how law is required to operate under conditions of uncertainty, risk, and accelerated change. Human rights are thus treated not only as a normative horizon, but also as a practical and contested field of governance, responsibility, and institutional design.
The dossier remains open and is currently being expanded, as additional manuscripts are under evaluation and may be integrated into this thematic collection as they complete the peer-review process.

Revista Jurídica Portucalense (Geopolitics and International Security in the 21st Century)
Vol. 1 No. 39 (2026)The 21st century has brought profound transformations and emerging challenges to the global order. The rise of "egopolitics" – an era of leadership shaped by personalism and self-interest – is redefining international relations. In this new paradigm, leaders prioritise individual power and influence over collective diplomacy, undermining multilateral institutions and reshaping traditional alliances. Simultaneously, a growing number of international conflicts have transitioned into "ceasefires without peace" – frozen conflicts where temporary solutions replace lasting peace agreements, leaving regions in a state of perpetual instability.
Additionally, the global economy is witnessing the rise of protectionism, with intensified trade wars and economic nationalism challenging the principles of free trade and global cooperation. The crisis of international institutions further exacerbates global uncertainty, as multilateral organisations (e.g., the UN, WTO, and EU) face growing criticism, institutional deadlock, and declining effectiveness. Meanwhile, a new era of militarisation is unfolding, characterised by increased military spending, the modernisation of arsenals, and renewed nuclear threats – all exacerbated by the weakening of arms control agreements.
In light of these developments, the thematic issue "Geopolitics and International Security in the 21st Century" aims to bring together scholarly contributions that explore these contemporary trends.
