Abstract

Similarly to current society, higher education institutions are facing important challenges nowadays, particularly of socio-economic, scientific and technological nature. In the context of these challenges, which simultaneously represent opportunities for 21st century institutions, we revisit in this article Ernest Boyer's (1990) concept of scholarship, as a concept that describes the multidimensional functions of higher education teachers/researchers. We also analyse the changes that have occurred in response to the challenges of the network society, the digital practices and the global movement of openness to knowledge, with particular attention to the potentialities that the movement of openness to knowledge can bring to each of the academic functions of higher education teachers/researchers.
