Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the health habits and risk factors of the tourists who travel in cruises on the Douro river to promote strategies to develop health, security, and comfort of tourists. Surveys were delivered, face-to-face, to tourists who travel on cruises on the Douro River with the “Barcadouro” tour operator, between April and October 2018. The participants were 1086 tourists, with ages between 18 and 89 (M = 54.9; SD = 14.9), from 36 different nationalities. The chi-square test and relative frequencies were used to match the aims of this study. Ninety-one-point-four percent of the tourists eat three or more meals a day, and 74.4% drink alcohol. Only 9.7% were smokers and 75.8% affirmed to practice exercise. According to the WHO’s standards, 45.1% of the tourists are overweight. Not all tourists have healthy behaviors. Therefore, there are some risk factors among the tourists, and developing strategies to promote health and wellbeing among this population will be necessary for the future.
