At the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, sport in Portugal, in its most diverse forms, experienced a remarkable increase. The proposed reflection, preceded by a short passage through the semantics of the word sport in the Portuguese language in different historical periods and a filiation on the Socratic questions about the importance of physical education/sport for human welfare, signals based on news of the magazine Ilustração Portuguesa and with particular focus on the years between 1909-1912, the positive growth of sports practice in Portugal, leisure and competition, in those years preceding the first participation of the country in the Olympics of the modern era, in Stockholm.
