Resumo

The aim of study was to analyze the relationship between MM and anthropometric parameters in elderly women and to develop a mathematical model to predict MM based on anthropometric parameters. The study included 63 women (71 ± 4 years). Body weight, height, arm, waist, hip and calf  circumferences were measured. MM was estimated using a densitometry. The MM index (MMI) was calculated using the equation (MMI = MM [kg] / height [m]²). A significant correlation was found between MM and body weight (r = 0.782, p < 0.01), arm circumference (r=0.688, p<0.01), waist circumference (r=0.467, p<0.01), hip circumference (r=0.629, p<0.01) and calf circumference (r=0.592, p<0.01). Regression analysis indicated that body mass and calf circumference were independent predictors of MM (r=0.81, r²=0.65, F=55.7). The prediction model was MM(kg)= 0.474+(0.162*body mass)+(0.151*calf circumference). The results of this study indicate that MM is related to anthropometric parameters and that the linear regression model proposed can adequately predict MM in older women.
