Abstract

INTRODUCTION
The Portuguese nursing history is shared with the history of the Catholic Nurses and Health Professionals Association (ACEP5) since 1950, the date when the Association's Organizing Committee was formalized.

DEVELOPMENT
Notable Portuguese nurses with moral integrity and acknowledged competence were in the genesis, implementation and development of the ACEPS, and through it promoted the humanistic centred technical-scientific development of nurses and nursing in Portugal. The history of organizations and movements is made through the persons in them. It is though imperative to highlight the undeniable and singular contribute of the Nurse Emília Maria da Costa Macedo for the ACEPS' purposes.

CONCLUSIONS
To know the history helps understanding the present, but above all, should prepare us for facing the future. As happened in the past, nursing and nowadays community need ACEPS to continue its path and its mission.
