Introduction: The use of specific syringes to assess cuff control balloon inflation pressure in intubated patients allows ensuring the correct pressure defined by evidence.
Objectives: To assess nurses’ knowledge about cuff control balloon inflation pressure in intubated patients.
Methods: This was a quantitative descriptive-correlational cross-sectional cohort study, using a non-probability sample of 187 nurses working in mainland Portugal and its islands. Data were collected through the application of a Questionnaire on Nurses’ Knowledge about cuff control balloon inflation pressure inintubated patients (Quinteiro and Cunha, 2021), via online, published by the Ordem dos Enfermeiros.
Results: The statistics of the dimensions of nurses’ knowledge show that, on average, knowledge is higher in the “relevance of using the syringe” (0.92),followed by “intubation-associated pneumonia” (0.75). It was found, in 56.1%, moderate knowledge about the operation of the syringe, predominance of good knowledge (96.7%) about the relevance of its use and good knowledge (81.3%) about pneumonia associated with intubation. There are statistically significant differences between the unit where they exercise their functions and knowledge about the relevance of using the syringe (p<0.01).
Conclusions: Overall, nurses have good knowledge about cuff control balloon inflation pressure in intubated patients.
