Trauma severity index of victims of interpersonal violence assisted in the emergency department

Introduction: Knowing the trauma severity index of victims of interpersonal violence is a prerequisite for providing excellent care based on knowledge of the profile of these victims.
Objective: To determine the trauma severity index of victims of interpersonal violence assisted in the emergency department.
Methods: Observational study, with a cross-sectional cohort and retrospective focus, with 211 victims of interpersonal violence admitted to the emergency department of a hospital in the central region of Portugal, from January 1 to December 31, 2020. Data were collected from the system of Alert® information.
Results: Predominance in males (63.0%) with a mean age of 45.36 years, admitted in the afternoon (46.8%), on Sundays (22.2%), with urgent priority (67.5%) and discriminator “moderate pain” (50.0 %), prevailing physical violence (99.1%), originating from family members/intimate partners (18.0%) in the female gender and violence in the community (14.2%) in the male gender. The study was translated from a low trauma severity index.
Conclusion: In the proper management of assistance to the person victim of interpersonal violence, the severity of the injuries must be considered, giving special attention to younger and older victims, victims of violence in the community, since the study revealed that they are the ones with the highest rate. of trauma severity.
