Abstract

Introduction: In the pre-hospital setting, nurses experience health/illness transitions in victims presenting with signs and symptoms of stroke, using several instruments to perform their assessment, such as the Cincinnati Prehospital Stroke Severity Scale, the Rapid Arterial Occlusion Evaluation, among others. Subsequently, they activate referral pathways promoting health gains for the victims.

Objective/s: To map the instruments for assessing signs and symptoms in pre-hospital stroke victims.

Methods: A scoping review will be conducted according to the model proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. The proposed research question is: Which are the instruments of evaluation of signs and symptoms in stroke victims used by nurses in the pre-hospital? The selection of studies, data extraction and synthesis will be performed by two independent reviewers.

Results: We anticipate the inclusion of several studies that address the assessment instruments of signs and symptoms in stroke victims applied by nurses in the pre-hospital setting.

Conclusion: This scoping review will be essential to synthesize the existing assessment tools and present the most relevant ones for nurses' clinical practice, in order to improve their performance in the activation of referral pathways, minimizing irreversible damage to the victim's health status.
