Introduction: The stress perceived by nurses in critical situations is recognized in recent literature as a harmful variable for individual health and teamwork.
Objective/s: To study the Stress profile of Nurses in the context of critically ill people in a Health Unit in the North and analyze its relationship with sociodemographic variables.
Methods: Cross-sectional, quantitative, descriptive-correlational study, applying the Stress Perception Scale (EPS) (Cohen et al., 1983), adapted to the portuguese population by Pais Ribeiro & Marques (2009), to 355 nurses in the critical person context, mostly female (51.0%), aged between 36-50 years old (51.3%) (x=39.25±8.89), married (48.7%) and with a degree (38.9%).
Results: The sample presents a moderate level of Stress (x=28.36±4.21), varying between a minimum of 24.15 and a maximum of 32.57 points, for a range of intermediate scores [18-35]. The statistical analysis revealed that H1 could not be rejected, showing a relationship between perceived stress and sociodemographic variables, although the differences were not statistically significant. There was a higher Stress profile in young, male, divorced and master's degree nurses.
Conclusion: The work of nurses in critical care causes physical and psychological consequences, increasing levels of perceived stress. It is urgent to implement strategies to mitigate this situation.
