Abstract

Introduction: Despite the growing recognition of the importance of prevention and management of childhood obesity in primary health care, the provision of this care is not widespread.

Objective: The objective of this systematic review protocol is to assess and synthesize the available qualitative evidence on the experiences of parents in managing childhood obesity within primary health care.

Methods: A qualitative evidence synthesis will be conducted following the JBI methodology for systematic reviews of qualitative evidence. This review will include primary studies reporting the experiences of parents or carers of children (£18 years) with overweight or obesity receiving care in primary health care settings. The following databases will be searched: MEDLINE, CINHAL, PsycINFO (EBSCOhost), Scopus, and ProQuest Dissertations and theses, covering the period from 2015-2025. Two independent reviewers will screen studies for inclusion, assess methodological quality, extract data, and perform data synthesis. A standardized JBI data extraction tool will be used, and data synthesis will be performed using meta-aggregation. The confidence in the synthesized findings will be assessed using the ConQual approach.

Conclusion: The findings from this review may contribute to suggest potential resources or enhancements of counselling and intervention on childhood obesity in primary care.
