The avieiras villages, located along the Tagus River, especially in the District of Santarém, are one of the most emblematic forms of human occupation associated with traditional fishing and river culture in Portugal. Among the various Avieira Villages, the villages of Caneiras and Escaroupim stand out not only for their architectural and historical uniqueness, but also for their typical cuisine, which preserves ancient recipes with a strong influence from local fishing activity. This article aims to explore the socio-economic and cultural characteristics of the avieiras villages, with particular attention to Caneiras, and to analyse the local gastronomy, with the main dish being ‘Fataça na Telha’ a traditional speciality that illustrates the link between the community and the natural resources of the Tagus.
