Abstract

In the phenomenon of human aging, the group of people over 80 years old is the one that grows the most. Their subjective experiences are the least studied. Aspect also reflected in nursing diagnoses taxonomies. Objective: Present the contributions from Hermeneutic Phenomenology to understand these experiences. Theoretical anchoring: humanistic nursing theory. Method: Qualitative phenomenological interpretive study; access to participants: snowball method; phenomenological interviews. Results: Through the hermeneutic interpretative process emerged the theme Existential Well-being, describing that being in the world means: feeling fulfilled by some aspect in life; for being able to do; being healthy; having faith in God; while being with others, means: having family harmony; feeling esteem for its existence; live under the aegis of human values; attachment to their homes; mediating body of existential experiences. Conclusions: Hermeneutic Phenomenology contributes to nursing knowledge to access the existential needs of people over 80 years of age.
