Abstract

The central piece of this article is a Portuguese retranslation of a long-forgotten letter written in Cochin by Francisco de Albuquerque to King Manuel I, dated late December 1503. The original was lost, but a contemporary german version survives in the Konrad Peutinger collection in Augsburg and was published in the 19th century. Here one can find information on the events on the Malabar coast in 1503, including the peace negotiations with Calicut and some episodes that do not coincide with the history as it is given by the chronicles.
