This article analizes the main military and political ideas of Afonso de Albuquerque. It focuses namely on those that led into the conquest of some of the more important coastal centres of the Indian Ocean. On one hand, one tries to understand the reform of the Portuguese military organization in Asia, namely the building of several new armadas. On the other hand, one tries to show how these reform contributed to the so-called «asiatization» of Portuguese shipbuilding and in a very short period to profound changes in the Portuguese sea-warfare in the Indian Ocean.
