No. 43 (2022): Middle East and Eastern Africa Intersected: Reflections from contemporary scholarship

This thematic issue of Cadernos de Estudos Africanos presents a selection of papers from the 4th AEGIS Thematic Conference on the Middle East and Eastern Africa. The issue explores the deep interconnections between these regions, focusing on migration, politics, security, diplomacy, and religion. It challenges conventional regional boundaries and approaches, especially in the context of the Red Sea, where Africa and the Middle East converge. The articles engage with themes such as the economic dynamics between the Middle East and East Africa, the redefinition of regionalism, the limitations of traditional international relations theories, and cultural practices that shape mobility and identity in the Mediterranean and Red Sea. The papers call for a rethinking of regional studies, advocating for a more nuanced, interdisciplinary perspective on the interconnectedness of the Middle East, Eastern Africa, and the Indian Ocean.
