Abstract

Background: Pubertal delay is a common condition in the Endocrinology clinic. Many diseases can underlie this phenomenon, being inflammatory bowel disease, namely Crohn’s disease, one of the most commonly related chronic diseases.

Case report: Sixteen-years-old female adolescent, with no previous medical history, was referred to the Pediatric clinic because of pubertal delay with primary amenorrhea and failure to thrive. She had initially no digestive symptoms. She subsequently developed gastrointestinal complaints. Laboratorial, endoscopic and radiological studies that allowed the diagnosis of moderate to severe Crohn’s disease.

Discussion/Conclusion: We aimed to aware Crohn’s disease as one of the causes of pubertal and growth delay, highlighting the need for early diagnosis and therapy, in order to reach a favorable pubertal development.
