Introduction: Fecal incontinence (FI) has deleterious effects on patients, resulting in discomfort, anxiety, embarrassment and profound changes in their quality of life. There is tenuous evidence that these effects can be mitigated with the implementation of pelvic rehabilitation programs.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of implementing pelvic rehabilitation programs in people with fecal incontinence after colorectal surgery.
Methods: A systematic review of the literature was carried out. The selection of scientific articles was carried out using the EBSCOhost computer platform, using the databases: PubMed, CINAHL, MedicLatina, Complementary Index and ScienceDirect, with a publication date between 2010-2019. The studies were analyzed and critically evaluated by two reviewers independently, respecting the inclusion and exclusion criteria previously established, with the corpus of the study consisting of 4 articles, of proven methodological quality.
Results: It was found that there are significant improvements in the reduction of fecal incontinence after the implementation of pelvic rehabilitation programs. Biofeedback proved to be a very safe and effective method in the treatment of patients with this pathology. Evidence also points to non-pharmacological treatments that include biofeedback programs, combined with pelvic floor muscle training and anal electrostimulation (multimodal programs) relevant in improving FI.
Conclusion: There is indeed effectiveness in pelvic rehabilitation programs for people with fecal incontinence after colorectal surgery, with emphasis on the use of biofeedback and multimodal programs. There is also a need for rehabilitation nurses to develop structured intervention programs that optimize the quality of life of these patients.
