The Needs of the Deaf Community in the Access of Health Services according to Transcultural Nursing

Introduction: This project refers to the understanding of the needs of the adult deaf person and community in accessing health services in the district of Braga. Database research and literature review made the scarcity of data and lack of studies noticeable, highlighting gaps in health research and the biomedical perspective in the scientific support of legislative documents, reflected in the provision of nursing care due to the association of deaf people to people with disabilit
Objectives: The four metaparadigmatic concepts of nursing attending to Transcultural Nursing (Leininger, 1979) and the fourteen basic human needs (Henderson, 1991) guided the analysis of the problem, presenting as objectives to describe, interpret and understand the needs of the deaf community, with the purpose to enhance the role of the nurse as a key axis in guaranteeing universal access of health services, and in the humanist provision of dignified nursing care. An exploratory interview was then carried out with a deaf person.
Methods: This is a descriptive qualitative study, to be carried out in the district of Braga, guided by the basic ethical conduct of research. The sampling technique will be two: by snowball and theoretical saturation, with participants delimited by data saturation. The treatment and analysis of data is characterized by the technique of constant comparative analysis of content, using NVivo technology. Data collection will be carried out with a Portuguese Sign Language interpreter, through a semi-structured interview, validated by the exploratory interview.
Results: Aiming at enriching of the conceptual framework, the exploratory interview enabled the conception of deafness as a constructive characteristic of the identity of this minority, cultural and linguistic community, emphasizing the sociocultural perspective to be adopted in nursing care.
Conclusion: This study could contribute to improve the evidence-based practice, based on Transcultural Nursing, aiming at improving the quality of care, making care more and more dignified and centered on hope.
