Abstract

Introduction: There have been several initiatives to reduce the incidence and harm of medication errors associated with healthcare, with intervention in the different strategic areas of care taking on major importance. The specificity and complexity of neonatal care makes its target population undoubtedly more vulnerable to medication errors, with greater potential for harm.

Objective: To understand the relationship between the multifactorial causes of medication errors and the quality and safety in neonatal care.

Methodology: The research was carried out using the scientific databases ESBCO and PubMed and met the inclusion criteria of a time period between 2018 and 2023, documents available in full text and free of charge, and age between 0 and 28 days (newborn). The methodological approach was developed through the stages defined by the JBI model.

Results: Individual neonatal characteristics, as well as the complex environment in which the healthcare professional performs his or her role, are determining factors in the incidence of medication-related errors.

Conclusion: The therapeutic environment of the neonatal setting, in all its dimensions, plays a key role in preventing, analysing and mitigating medication errors, and there is also a need for more studies to improve scientific knowledge and validate care practices in the setting of Portuguese neonatal intensive care units.
