Introduction: “Delirium” is an acute neuropsychiatric syndrome, common among hospitalized elderly patients, and is associated with high rates of morbidity, mortality, and prolonged hospital stays. Its prevention is crucial and involves not only medical and nursing interventions but also the integration of family members/caregivers. Nurses' attitudes towards the participation of family members/caregivers are key to the success of these interventions.
Objective: To identify factors that influence the integration of family members/caregivers by nurses in the prevention of delirium in hospitalized elderly patients.
Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted on the Scientific Database Platform of the Portuguese Nursing Council (which aggregated content from the EBSCOhost: CINAHL Complete, Nursing & Allied Health Collection: Comprehensive, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials) and Medline (via PubMed), using a time frame from 2014 to August 6, 2024. Data were extracted with the aid of a table, followed by a critical analysis.
Results: Five studies were included from the 20 articles identified. Four categories emerged as being capable of impacting the care partnership.
Conclusion: The integration of family members/caregivers is crucial for the prevention of delirium but faces several challenges. Continuous education and support are essential to improve the partnership between nurses and family members/caregivers, as well as to encourage training and improve clinical practices.
