This article presents a study that was developed in the context of the internship report of the first author’s in the training program to obtain the master’s degree. It focuses on the analysis of the students’ mistakes in mathematical situations with rational number. The study follows a qualitative methodology on a case study focused on 58 students’ essays (aged 11) within four tasks. Each task consists of a mathematical question and a resolution which the students must analyse and identify whether it is right or wrong. Two of the tasks involves numerical expressions and the other two consist of problems.
The results of this study show that most of the students at the end of the 6th grade (aged 11) has difficulties on problem solving with rational numbers. However, most of them know the rules of operations in numerical expressions with fractional numbers.
