Abstract

Embryo transfer (ET) involves the collection of an embryo from a donor mare and transfer to a recipient mare, which will lead the gestation to full term. ET has is for the production of multiple foals/year of healthy reproductive mares, old mares unable to complete a gestation and mares in competition. In some endangered breeds, such as the Sorraia horse, this technique could be very advantageous, enhancing its conservation. Embryo transfer was carried out in 2016 with the collaboration of Embriovet. The Sorraia donor mare is a female 6 years old, 3 births, bred by Escola Superior Agrária de Santarém. The recipient mare is a 3-year-old Lusitano female, provided by a private breeder. The donor was covered in a normal oestrous cycle, by natural mating, by a 13-year-old Sorraia stallion. On the 7th day after ovulation, uterine lavage was performed to collect the embryo. Recipient mare was induced in oestrous with prostaglandin F2α and induced ovulation with hCG. On the 10th and 14th day after ovulation, ultrasounds were performed to diagnose gestation in the recipient mare, whose results were positive, confirming again around the 50th day of pregnancy. In June of 2017 the Lusitano mare gave birth to a Sorraia foal.
