ABSTRACT

Following an invitation made by a trainee from the Social Education Course, Ernesto Nobre, to reflect on gender equality in Santarém and taking into account my professional connection to the Municipal Plan for Gender Equality, the idea came to look better at the street names of the city. It is only a short walk to quickly and unmistakably realize the asymmetry between men and women in local toponyms. A first and brief analysis of the toponymy in the gender perspective is presented in this poster.

Based on an Santarém City Council Excel listing of the names of the city streets, a qualitative and quantitative exploratory approach was taken to identify the very few women who named the streets: who they are, where they come from, in which sphere (s) they move, to what extent they are known.

The study confirmed the stark asymmetry initially perceived in a naturalistic way through a walk in the streets. The women of the streets of Santarém are street women (courtesans, condinees, sluts), saints, mothers, daughters, teachers ... There is little or no information on some of the women at the local level, such as Maria Inês Schaller Dias or Raquel Guedes de Amorim.

It is intended that this first study might lead to the reflection on local politics related to the process of naming the streets of the city.
