Abstract

Looking at what is happening with Medicine in Portugal and a little around the world, few topics could, at this time, give me more satisfaction than this one. Not because I feel a particular joy or pleasure, but because it seems urgent to me to reflect on what emerges from it. It is, in my view, a cycle that closes when something
comes up and finds something that was on hold. Which is as it says, the ends touch. Where does Medicine go? Are the technological and scientific advances that seduce us and pride us to serve Man better?
Are we proposing to provide Palliative Care (CP) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)? Can we "untie" this oxymoron? Can anesthesiology have its own role in this ontologically challenging scenario? Or are we, after
all, witnessing a reassuring meeting of Medicine with herself?
