Controversies and Models for a Sociology of Intervention

The sociology of intervention has always defined its central challenge as the utopian search for the key to social change, and using this theoretical reflection, to test methods of reducing uncertainty. This has now produced a long history of theoretical, methodological and practical work progressing along two different routes that today still remain distant from each other. On the one hand, there is a quest to find the general laws of history and of the fundamental factors of change, and on the other, to formulate propositions which might give account of the irreducible plurality of the processes of change, and their contingent, localised, complex and provisional nature, their somewhat blurred edges and their underlying tension. Each «concrete system of action» is understood to contain a minimum of order and interdependence behind the apparent disorder of the strategies of individual and collective agents. The research process is intended to delineate the limits, borders and mechanisms of regulation and disorder within this system, and to identify the mechanisms of alienation and emancipation which co-exist within concrete processes of action.
