Abstract

Gender-based violence is a social problem that can and should be combated through primary prevention programs in schools. In 2004, UMAR - União de Mulheres Alternativa e Resposta - created a program for the primary prevention of gender violence and, since 2014, it has been funded by the Portuguese government and is called ART'THEMIS+.  This holistic and systematic program works with children and young people from kindergarten to secondary/vocational education. One of the forms of gender-based violence that has concerned NGOs and political institutions is violence in adolescent dating relationships. With this in mind, the ART'THEMIS+ Project has been carrying out a national study with young people in the 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary/vocational education since 2017 on this issue, with the aim of understanding the indicators of legitimization and victimization of young people in Portugal.

The results of UMAR's 2024 national study on dating violence demonstrate the importance of primary prevention of this form of violence.
