Health Professionals’ Attitudes and Perceptions Toward Alcohol Through a Matrix Support Approach

Background: Alcohol consumption is a global public health issue that affects both adults and young people. It is one of the leading causes of preventable death and disability worldwide.
Objective: To analyze mental health professionals’ attitudes and perceptions toward alcohol users through a workshop designed to train these professionals in matrix support for alcohol-related care.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted during three workshops following the constructivist model. Forty-five professionals from public healthcare services for populations with harmful alcohol use participated in the study. The Escala de Atitudes Face ao Álcool, Alcoolismo e Alcoolista (Attitudes toward Alcohol, Alcoholism and People with Alcohol-related Disorders Scale) and sociodemographic data were used.
Results: Positive attitudes were observed in the theoretical domains, work relationships, and contact with users. Negative attitudes were observed regarding alcohol use and its etiology.
Conclusion: The professionals’ attitudes were not associated with their sociodemographic variables. Additionally, the participants’ training and awareness provided them with the skills and positive attitudes necessary for effectively caring for alcohol users.
