Rui Vieira de Castro é o atual Reitor da Universidade do Minho. Foi ainda ViceReitor e Presidente do Conselho Académico da universidade. Dirigiu, entre 1998 e 2003, a Revista Portuguesa de Educação. Desenvolveu a sua atividade de ensino sobretudo nas áreas das literacias e da educação e linguagem. Os seus interesses científicos concentram-se nas áreas da educação e linguagem, com foco principal nas questões do ensino do português, e das literacias, com ênfase nos usos de linguagem em contexto de trabalho. Dirigiu projetos de educação e desenvolvimento em Timor-Leste, com financiamento da UNICEF, do IPAD e do Ministério da Educação de Timor-Leste. Colaborou com o Ministério da Educação de Portugal, no contexto de reformas curriculares, da formação de professores e da avaliação educacional. Neste âmbito, publicou mais de oitenta trabalhos académicos, em contexto nacional e internacional.
